DriveNow (from English drive now for ' drive now ') was a car sharing offer from the automobile manufacturer BMW . In February 2019, the previously independent car sharing providers DriveNow and car2go became part of the Share Now joint venture between BMW and Daimler . Since January 14, 2020, the services have been offered exclusively through Share Now.

DriveNow offered its services in Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, Vienna , London , Copenhagen , Milan, Helsinki, Lisbon and Brussels . In October 2017, DriveNow exceeded 1,000,000 registered customers. The number of DriveNow vehicles was 6,510 in November 2018.

In their fleet, the operators offered various mini models (3- and 5-door, convertible, Clubman, Countryman ), as well as the BMW models X1 , 1 Series , BMW 2 Series Convertible, BMW X2 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the electric BMW i3 on.

development

DriveNow MINI Convertible

On June 9, 2011, DriveNow was launched with a fleet of 300 vehicles in Munich, in September 2011 in Berlin, in 2012 in Düsseldorf and Cologne. Hamburg followed as the fifth major German city in November 2013 with 450 vehicles. In June 2012, DriveNow started in the first American city, San Francisco , exclusively with electric vehicles. In mid-October 2014, the company expanded into other European countries and started with 400 vehicles in Vienna. In the London districts of Islington, Haringey, Hackney and Waltham Forest and, following an expansion in 2018, also in the districts of Westminster, Barnet, Tower Hamlets, Southwark and Brent, 720 vehicles of the brands BMW i3, BMW 1 Series, MINI Cooper and MINI Cabrio were parked in December 2018 available for spontaneous rental. In San Francisco, service was suspended indefinitely on November 2, 2015. The company cited regulatory requirements as the reason that prevented the operation of a one-way car sharing service. From September 2015 DriveNow was represented in Copenhagen. The start in Stockholm followed on October 20, 2015. DriveNow started on July 6, 2016 with around 300 vehicles in the Belgian capital, Brussels, and on October 19, 2016 with 480 vehicles in Milan. From May 24, 2017, DriveNow was also represented in Helsinki with 150 vehicles, and in Lisbon from September 12, 2017 with 211 vehicles.

DriveNow BMW 1 Series

In 2012, the company's car sharing concept received the ÖkoGlobe in the mobility models category. In April 2013, DriveNow was named the test winner in the field of free-floating providers in a test by car sharing providers. In September 2016 DriveNow received the "Handelsblatt Energy Award" in the mobility category.

On January 29, 2018, the companies involved announced that BMW had acquired the shares in the joint venture from Sixt. According to media reports, the purchase price is 209 million euros. The impetus for the merger of the mobility services of the BMW Group and Daimler AG was presented by the competition authorities with an application for a joint venture . In March 2018, BMW took over all of Sixt's shares, making DriveNow a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BMW Group. The joint Share Now offer started in February 2019 ; since January 14, 2020, the services can only be accessed via Share Now; DriveNow accounts that were already in existence until then were transferred to Share Now on this date.

functionality

In contrast to classic car rental , where you rent a vehicle at a specified location and typically return it after one or more days, with the new car sharing models it was possible to use freely parked vehicles in urban areas at minute intervals. The minute cost from 25 cents including fuel and parking fees (when buying minute packages), otherwise from 33 cents. Typically the car had to be parked in the same city in which it was rented. Dusseldorf and Cologne were an exception: Here, for a surcharge, it was also possible to return it in the other city. There was an additional "service fee" of 8 euros for parking the vehicle in the neighboring town.

There was no monthly fee for use. However, you had to register online once and pay a registration fee of 29 euros. It was possible to reserve the vehicle free of charge for up to 15 minutes without cancellation fees . Alternatively, a reservation was possible for up to eight hours for 10 cents per minute. The car sharing vehicles were opened with the DriveNow smartphone app. After a successful status query, which was indicated by the permanent green of the previously yellow flashing LED on the windshield, the vehicle opened. A PIN was required to start the engine. Like its competitors, DriveNow paid flat-rate parking fees to the municipal authorities of the cities in order to allow customers to park free of charge in paid parking zones.

Electromobility

A BMW i3 from DriveNow in Munich

From June 2012 to November 2015, the company offered in San Francisco 150 electric vehicles of the type BMW ActiveE at. Frequent recharging was necessary because of the short range of approx. 100 km compared to cars with internal combustion engines . To this end, BMW cooperated with the world's largest provider of electric charging stations, Coulomb Technologies, and developed its own brand for it: ParkNow . Electric vehicles were borrowed from such a station and parked at one of the 14 ParkNow stations; the system guarantees a free parking space at the destination upon reservation.

Because this broke the concept of flexible car sharing and the customer, as with conventional car sharing services, was restricted to fixed stations, DriveNow adjusted the tariffs for this: the first half an hour cost 12 US dollars, then 32 cents every minute .

From June 2013 to July 2015, the company introduced in Berlin and Munich, a total of 60 electric vehicles of the type BMW ActiveE available. The integration of electric vehicles was part of the WiMobil research project, which examined the effect of e-car sharing systems on mobility and the environment in urban areas.

As of July 15, 2015, there were more than 1,000 fully electric BMW i3s in the fleet. In London, DriveNow also offered the BMW i3 from May 2015 and was able to benefit from tax breaks. DriveNow started in Copenhagen in September 2015 with a purely electric fleet of 400 vehicles.

In May 2017, BMW entered into a strategic partnership in the area of urban mobility with the city of Hamburg. The city pledged to gradually increase the number of charging stations. In return, DriveNow gradually increased the number of electric BMW i3s.

criticism

In July 2016, the car sharing provider DriveNow came under public criticism after it became known that a court was able to create an exact movement profile in proceedings against a user based on data from BMW . BMW then admitted that its car sharing vehicles are equipped with a special car sharing module (CMS for short). The encrypted data on vehicle operation and condition would be "overwritten on a rolling basis". Since the accident to be negotiated already happened in summer 2015, experts had doubts about this statement. In addition, BMW stated that it would only pass on the time and place of the start and end of the rental to DriveNow - the court also received data such as the position of the smartphone used for the rental and the outside temperature. Legal experts therefore warned that "every vehicle manufacturer collects unimaginable amounts of data through its vehicles and can evaluate it almost at any time."

In addition to the criticism relating to data protection, the reckless behavior of DriveNow drivers in road traffic was also criticized in some cases. This was linked to the minute-by-minute billing, which would put the driver under time pressure.
