BMW Welt Jazz Award
The BMW Welt Jazz Award of the BMW Group is a jazz prize awarded annually since 2009 in the BMW Welt in Munich , in which the winners of an international band competition (with an annually changing motto) are honored: six ensembles join between January and March six selected Sunday matinees in the double cone of the BMW Welt; the prize will be awarded in April / May after a concert by the two finalists in the auditorium of BMW Welt. A first prize of 10,000 euros and a second prize of 5,000 euros as well as an audience award will be awarded.
The idea came up after successful jazz weeks in the winter of 2007/2008 at BMW Welt with Bernd Lhotzky , Chris Hopkins , Warren Vaché , Olaf Polziehn , Scott Hamilton and Quadro Nuevo, among others .
The jury is made up of jazz experts and those familiar with the scene. In 2017, under the chairmanship of Oliver Hochkeppel (music and culture journalist of the Süddeutsche Zeitung ), Andreas Kolb (editor-in-chief of JazzZeitung.de and neue musikzeitung ), Roland Spiegel (music editor with a focus on jazz at Bayerischer Rundfunk , BR-Klassik ), Heike Lies (musicologist) met , Music and music theater department in the cultural department of the state capital Munich ) and Christiane Böhnke-Geisse ( Unterfahrt jazz club , artistic director of the international jazz festival “ Bingen swingt ”).
In 2016, the BMW Welt Jazz Award was expanded to include an annual young talent award. With the BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Award, BMW AG and the City of Munich specifically promote local talent from the jazz sector and, in addition to the concerts at the Munich Jazz Club Unterfahrt and at the Leipzig Jazz Days, donate prize money of 3,000 euros.
