Anke Helfrich (born November 11, 1966 in Horb am Neckar ) is a German musician (piano, composition) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Helfrich grew up in Windhoek ( Namibia ) and Weinheim , where she also received piano lessons. After her initial success as a state award winner at “ Jugend jazzt ” (1987), she studied in Freiburg and from 1989 at the “Amsterdamse Hoogeschool voor de Kunsten” in Hilversum with Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna . Because of her excellent graduation, she received a scholarship that enabled her to study with Kenny Barron and Larry Goldings in New York . After her return in 1996 she formed a trio with Johannes Weidenmüller and Jochen Rückert . In 2000 her first CD "You'll See" was released with guest soloist Mark Turner . From 2002 Martin Gjakonovski and Dejan Terzic played in their trio, with whom she toured internationally and made guest appearances at numerous festivals. Together with Roy Hargrove , the Anke Helfrich Trio recorded the Better Times Ahead CD . In January 2009 her CD Stormproof (with Henning Sieverts , Dejan Terzic and Nils Wogram ) was released by Enja -Records.

From 1999 to 2004 she also played in Jürgen Seefelder's quartet . She continued to perform with Benny Bailey , Carolyn Breuer , Keith Copeland , Özay , Johnny Griffin , Thomas Heidepriem , Jimmy Woode , Tony Lakatos , Manu Katché , Christian von Kaphengst , Stacy Rowles , the Diva Jazz Orchestra and Johannes Weidenmüller .

Her tours have taken her to Spain, Italy, France, Poland, Turkey, Bulgaria, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Luxembourg, USA, China, Malaysia and Africa.

Helfrich has been a lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim since 1999 and at the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main .

Prizes and awards

In 1996 Helfrich and her trio won the "European Jazz Competition" and in 1998 first prize at the "Hennesy Jazz Search". Her album “You'll See” was nominated in 2000 for the German Record Critics' quarterly award. In the same year she was honored with the Weinheimer “Muddy's Award”. In 2003 she received the jazz prize of the city of Worms . In 2006, her CD Better Times Ahead was also proposed for the German Record Critics' Quarterly Prize. In 2016 she received the ECHO Jazz in the category “Instrumentalist of the year national - piano / keyboards”. In 2017 she was awarded the Hessian Jazz Prize.
