Hilversum is located in Gooiland , an area with heather, forest, meadows and small lakes. The city is located 30 km southeast of Amsterdam and 25 km north of Utrecht . It has three train stations: Hilversum Noord, Hilversum (both on the Amsterdam - Amersfoort - Groningen / Hengelo - Berlin line ) and Hilversum Sportpark. Motorways connect the city with Utrecht ( A27 ) and Amsterdam ( A1 ).
The community, a farming village until around 1820, is known as the “media city” because it is the radio and television center of the Netherlands. Dutch radio has been broadcasting here since the 1920s. Numerous radio and television studios are located here.
There is also some industry in Hilversum as well as a large shunting and maintenance facility for the Dutch Railways (Stapelplaats Crailoo) . Hilversum has been a popular place to live for commuters from Amsterdam for more than a century .

Pieter Broertjes ( PvdA ) has been the acting mayor of the municipality since July 1, 2011 . His colleagues include the councilors Wimar Jaeger ( D66 ), Floris Voorink ( VVD ), Willem van der Spek ( CDA ), Eric van der Want (D66) and the municipal secretary Dick Emmer .
Attractions
- The town hall in Hilversum, which is known nationwide for its architecture, was built in the years 1928–1931 according to the plans of the community architect Willem Marinus Dudok , who is also responsible for many other architectural monuments in Hilversum. As Rijksmonument No. 46773 it is a Dutch cultural monument. The program Traumhochzeit , hosted by Linda de Mol , was filmed in this building. In the basement of the town hall there is a permanent exhibition on the architect.
- The Roman Catholic St. Vitus Church, which was built in 1892 in neo-Gothic style according to the plans of the master builder Pierre Cuypers , has a capacity of approx. 1,800 people; its tower is 100 meters high. It is Rijksmonument No. 22159.
- The Hilversum Municipal Museum, which opened in 2005, shows exhibitions on art and architecture.
- In the Media Park on the north side of the city, there are radio and television studios. The Museum of Radio and Television ( Beeld en Geluid Experience ) was built here in 2006 .

In 1958, the third edition of the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson took place in Hilversum . In later years, Hilversum was the seat of the Dutch jury again and again .
In 1994, the Hilversum Conservatory merged with the Sweelinck Conservatory to form the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (located in nearby Amsterdam ).
On May 6, 2002, the politician Pim Fortuyn was shot dead in Hilversum's Mediapark .
