History of the city and glory

Purmerend's origins go back to the Middle Ages when it was a small fishing village . In 1410, Count Wilhelm VI. von Holland-Straubing for his trusted councilor Willem Eggert Purmerend with Purmerland (including the Ilpendam associated with him ) to the vrijen en hogen heerlijkheid Purmerend en Purmerland. He and his successors carried the title Heer or Vrijheer van Purmerend en Purmerland resp. Purmerland en Ilpendam . In 1423 Eggert had Purmerstein Castle built. The town still bears the Eggerts coat of arms today. Subsequently, the glory came over the burgraves of Montfoort (1439–1481) to the House of Egmond (1483).
In 1434 Purmerend received city rights and around 50 years later market rights . Since then it has been a center of the cattle and cheese trade. The glory came through the Burgraves of Montfoort (1439–1481) to the House of Egmond (1483). Lamoral von Egmond , the resistance fighter processed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in his work Egmont , was the ruler between 1540 and 1568. After the treason of Egmond to the Spanish Habsburgs their entire property was confiscated. In 1582 the glory was dismembered; Purmerend and the locality Neck were spun off from the legal association of the Purmer glory and came to the Dutch county respectively. back to the states of Holland and West Friesland . This placed them under the administration of Grafelijkheids Rekenkamer van de Domeinen , who together with the Vroedschap appointed the mayors and Schepen .
The remaining splendor of Purmerland and Ilpendam remained under the administration of the Grafelijkheids Rekenkamer until 1610 and was eventually resold by them.
