Johan II. Van Montfoort (also Jan , * 1382 ; † January 16, 1448 ) from the Van Montfoort family was the 7th Burgrave of Montfoort , Vrijheer of Polsbroek , Lord of Purmerend and Purmerland and governor of Holland and Zealand .

Biographical

He was the son of Hendrik III. van Montfoort and the Oda van Polanen. After the death of his father, Johan followed him as Burgrave of Montfoort. In the same year he took part in the siege of Gorinchem . He was appointed councilor of the County of Holland in 1417 . Later he was also appointed Dutch governor and treasurer .

He was one of the leaders of the party of the hook ( Dutch Hoeksen ) in the so-called hook-and-cod war (Dutch: Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten ), where it was about the title of Count of Holland. In 1422 he married Cunegonda van Bronkhorst , with whom he had at least two children; namely Hendrik IV , his direct successor, and a daughter named Oda. From the mid-1420s he was one of the most influential supporters of the Dutch Countess Jakobäa von Bayern , who affectionately called him Uncle Jan. He supported her in the battle of Alphen aan den Rijn , and helped her with the stabilization of the fortress triangle Gouda - Oudewater - Schoonhoven . In 1428, at the time of the siege of the city of Gouda, when he could not come to the aid of Jakobäa von Bayern in time, his property was largely confiscated. He was still able to keep his burgraviate of Montfoort. In 1439 Gerrit van Zijl sold him the rule of Purmerend, Purmerland and Ilpendam.
