Schoonhoven ( Netherlands , province of South Holland . On January 1, 2015, it was incorporated into the municipality of Krimpenerwaard .
) is a small town and a former municipality in theLocation and economy
Schoonhoven is located about 12 km southeast of Gouda on the north bank of the Lek . The other bank of this river can be reached by car ferry. During the crossing you have a beautiful view over Schoonhoven's old town. Schoonhoven is the " silver city " of the Netherlands with an important technical school for gold and silversmiths and watchmaking . Because of the small but beautiful old town, many tourists come to Schoonhoven for a short trip. In the area, dairy cattle are kept for the Gouda cheese .
history
In 1247, Mr. Johan I. van der Leede gave the residents of the village of Schoonhoven the right to build a harbor. He had a castle built for himself (which was lost in a fire in 1518). Other city rights soon followed . The town was walled around 1350. The Eighty Years' War brought a lot of disaster to Schoonhoven: it repeatedly changed sides after a conquest. The fortification was renewed in 1582 and 1601. For lack of other sources of income, some residents sought their salvation in silversmithing. In the 18th century there were very many who practiced this profession, and this craft is still important to Schoonhoven. The fortress was razed in 1816, but the place remained a garrison town . From 1945 to 1949, many soldiers went through Schoonhoven to fight the Indonesian independence movement.
Attractions
Schoonhoven is a romantic, typically Dutch small town. A city gate has been preserved near the Lek ferry. The town hall (built in 1452) was restored in 1929. The church in the city center (1375, tower from the 15th century) houses the tomb of the explorer Olivier van Noort . The gold, silver and watch museum is important. There are often exhibitions and demonstrations about modern, international silversmithing, some in English.
