Topography of South Holland

Zuid-Holland ( German  South Holland ) is a western province of the Netherlands on the North Sea coast . It is the most densely populated and highly industrialized area in the Netherlands . As of January 31, 2019, the province had 3,676,579 inhabitants.

geography

Adjacent provinces are Noord-Holland in the north, Utrecht and Gelderland in the east, Noord-Brabant in the southeast and Zeeland in the south. In the west the province borders on the North Sea .

Important cities are The Hague ( seat of government, International Court of Justice ) and the seaport city of Rotterdam . The cities of Leiden , Delft , Dordrecht , Schiedam and Gouda have a historical center.

To the southeast of Rotterdam are the Kinderdijk mills , which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Rivers and canals include the Nieuwe Maas , the Nieuwe Waterweg , the Oude Maas , the Haringvliet and the Hollands Diep . The majority of the population is concentrated in the Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden metropolitan area. The rest of the province is comparatively sparsely populated, agricultural, and in the course of the coastal dunes in the north it is also very touristyː Katwijk and Nordwijk are popular and quite contemplative tourist destinations with a focus on beach holidays.

In the south of the province there are many islands in the Rhine delta , which are connected by bridges and dams:

history

The county of Holland emerged at the beginning of the 10th century. Holland was the richest and most influential of the seven provinces that seceded Spanish rule in 1581 and formed the Republic of the Seven United Provinces , the forerunner of today's Kingdom of the Netherlands .

In order to limit the dominance of the province of Holland in Dutch politics, it was divided into the provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland when the constitution was amended in 1840 .
