Zuidplas is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland . It was created on January 1, 2010 through the voluntary merger of the previous communities of Moordrecht , Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Zevenhuizen-Moerkapelle . The temporary seat of the new municipality is located in two buildings in Nieuwerkerk aan de IJssel. Zuidplas has 42,823 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019).

The districts of the municipality are 's-Gravenweg, Groot Hitland, Hollevoeterbrug, Klein Hitland, Kortenoord, Moerkapelle , Moordrecht , Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, Oud Verlaat and Zevenhuizen.

Due to the municipal merger, the municipal council elections took place on November 18, 2009. Nine parties and groups are represented in the municipal council elected for the first time . The most successful are the VVD with six and the CDA with five out of 27 seats. After the local elections on March 21, 2018, the seats are distributed as follows:

Han Weber ( D66 ) has been the acting mayor of the community since September 30, 2019 . His colleagues include the councilors Jan Verbeek ( CDA ), Jan Hordijk ( VVD ), Jan-Willem Schuurman ( ChristenUnie / SGP ), Daan de Haas (VVD) and the municipal secretary Bert Kandel.

Parish name

The name Zuidplas, which refers to the Zuidplaspolder , prevailed against other proposals. So the names IJssel en Rotte , Oosterschieland and the similar Zuidplasland were suggested.
