places

In addition to the main town of Ridderkerk (where the municipal administration is based), the villages of Bolnes , Rijsoord , Oostendam and Slikkerveer are located in this municipality.

Location and economy

Ridderkerk is located in the northeast of the river island IJsselmonde , only a few kilometers southeast of Rotterdam and Capelle aan den IJssel and, like Capelle, can be called a suburb of Rotterdam. Many of the residents are commuters .

In the municipality, at Bolnes and Rijsoord, there are junctions of the many motorways that lead from Rotterdam through the municipality of Ridderkerk in many directions. Ridderkerk does not have a train station; There are several bus routes and a high-speed ferry Rotterdam-Ridderkerk- Dordrecht also serves the shuttle service.

Ridderkerk has had a tradition of shipping companies and shipyards since around 1870 - but these industries went down in the 1970s, despite attempts by the government to save them. Many smaller businesses of all kinds came back for this.

history

The name Ridderkerk has nothing to do with a "knight". The village originated in the polder Riederwaard (roughly: Schilfwerder) and received a regular administration in 1446 . The church was dedicated to St. George , the dragon slayer. As elsewhere in this area, fishermen and farmers lived in Ridderkerk who kept cattle and grew hemp for making ropes . The Huys ten Donck country estate was built in Bolnes at the end of the 18th century. A shipbuilding industry emerged around 1870. During this time, the community coat of arms was also created , with the holy knight St. George, who pierces the dragon / evil with the sword.

In the school in the village of Rijsoord, after the German invasion on May 15, 1940 , General Winkelman signed the document of surrender in which the Netherlands surrendered to the National Socialist German Reich : the start of a five-year occupation . Today there is a private museum with a planetarium in the former school. A lot of flax was cultivated in Rijsoord until around 40–45 years ago .
