Zoetermeer ( listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland and according to the CBS had 124,994 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 . The total area of the municipality is 37.05 km². Audio file / audio sample

Zoetermeer is located between The Hague , with which it has almost merged, and Utrecht , on the A12 motorway and, with several train stations, on the Gouda – The Hague railway line . The center of The Hague can also be reached quickly from many stops in the city with the RandstadRail light rail . There are various industrial companies in Zoetermeer , mainly in the IT and telecommunications sectors .

The city, originally a farming village, was expanded into a relief city from The Hague in the 1960s . A village church from the 18th century has been preserved in the center.

Today's municipality of Zoetermeer was created by merging the municipalities of Seghwaert and Zoetermeer in 1935. In order to respond to the great demand for housing after the Second World War , it was decided in 1962 to designate Zoetermeer as a "growth center" (Groeikern) .

After 1962 Zoetermeer grew from a parish of villages with less than 10,000 inhabitants to a town with more than 100,000 inhabitants in 1991. Traditional agriculture and the dialect died out.

District

Palenstein (1965), Driemanspolder (1966) and Meerzicht (1969)

High-rise buildings were erected in the first new districts of Driemanspolder, Palenstein and Meerzicht. These were mainly intended to bring young families to Zoetermeer. In other quarters there are mainly houses with gardens.

Buytenwegh de Leyens (1974), Seghwaert (1976), Noordhove (1985)

The demand for new apartments remained high in the 1970s. Low-rise buildings and single-family houses in particular remained popular. The Seghwaert and Buytenwegh de Leyens districts were built at high speed. There is a lot of green and water in these two districts. Multi-storey buildings are almost impossible to find in these districts. 1985 saw the start of construction on the new Noordhoven district, bordering de Zoetermeerse plas , a water sports area.

City Center (1981)

Construction of the city center, which was planned as the city's new shopping center, began in 1981. Shops, parking lots and a train station were built on the ground floor, the shopping arcade on the first floor and apartments and offices above. The aim was to create a compact and car-free shopping street that could also be easily reached by car and public transport. The apartments should ensure that the center remains lively even after the shops have closed. “Het Stadshart” is built in four sections: in phase 1 the western part, in phase 2 the promenade, in phase 3 passage, the northern, southern and western part and in phase 4 Waranda. In 2006, the “Spazio Shopping Space”, the latest addition to Stadshart, was opened and at the end of 2007 the sixth and final expansion, Cadenza, started.

Rokkeveen (1987)

As the completion of the first phase of Noordhoven approached, the construction of Rokkeveen started south of the A12. In 1992, the Floriade agricultural and horticultural exhibition took place here. The park and the Balijbos in the western part of Rokkeveen are from this time. In 2000 it was decided to expand Noordhoven towards Benthuizen . There are many condominiums and home building options in Rokkeveen.

Oosterheem (2000)

Almost simultaneously with the construction of Noordhove II, the construction of Oosterheem in the east of the city began in 2000. At the same time, the RandstadRail was extended to Zoetermeer to BleiZo station ("Verlengde Oosterheemlijn"). In the future, around 30,000 people will live in the Oosterheem district and 8,500 apartments will be built. That would make Oosterheem the largest neighborhood in Zoetermeer. Oosterheem is expected to be ready by the end of 2011.

Other districts

The Dorp district consists of the old village that gave the city its name today.

The districts of Brinkhage, Dwarstocht, Hoornerhage, Lansinghage, Nutrihage, Oosterhage Oost, Oosterhage West, Rokkehage and Zoeterhage, which surround the residential areas, are mainly reserved for industry and commerce.

future

With the construction of Oosterheem, Zoetermeer has also reached its municipal limits in the northeast. The polders in the north belong to the Groene Hart and are therefore not allowed to be built on. A further increase in the building volume and the number of apartments is only possible with multi-storey buildings, building over streets or at the expense of green spaces. The overbuilding of the A12 motorway and the Europaweg tunnel are being examined.

The demolition of the old city district is currently a major challenge. Palenstein, 40 years old, is the first quarter to be demolished. Building construction is partly making way for lower buildings and a better balance is being sought between social housing and more expensive free-standing apartments.
