history
The name Zoeterwoude
The origin of the name Zoeterwoude cannot be fully determined. The village was probably named after the river de Suet or de Swet . Suet or Swet probably means "sweet".
The origin of Zoeterwoude
Zoeterwoude emerged from individual settlements along the dike of the old Rijn (Rhine). A Roman camp was established here as early as 40. A path was built on the southern bank of the Rijn. A few houses slowly emerged along this path. Around 750 some buildings were built in what is now Weipoort. There St. Lebuinus built a small church in a place that was then called Suetan . It is not yet clear where this village was located. It is believed that it was at the mouth of the Weipoortsen Vliet.
Other villages in today's Zoeterwoude were also known early on. A Rodanburg (now Roomburg) is reported as early as 857 . A Northa (today perhaps Noord Aa) is also mentioned in the list of possessions of the St. Maartenskerk in Utrecht. In the 11th century Waldmannerveen (today perhaps the area of Zoeterwoude-Dorp) and Boschusa .
After 1200
Around 1200 there were several storm surges that inundated the area. Many residents moved to Leiden . Others left Suetan at the mouth of the Suet / Swet and moved to the area where Zoeterwoude was formed. In 1205 the name Zoeterwoude appears for the first time as Sotrewold . In 1276 it was called Soetrewold.
From 1300 until today
The municipal boundaries were set around 1300. Zoeterwoude was one of the largest municipalities in the Netherlands in terms of area. A large part of the area was annexed not much later by the surrounding communities, particularly of Leiden. In 1414 the Hoge Rijndijk was raised and in 1446 the name Weipoort was mentioned for the first time. In 1450 the first bridge was built between Leiderdorp and Zoeterwoude. In order to increase the field of fire for their cannons, the population of Leiden burned down Zoeterwoude in 1574 and flooded the polders. In 1650 the meanwhile uninhabited village was rebuilt again. From 1800 there were several Umgemeindungen in the city of Leiden. As a result, the municipality of Zoeterwoude became smaller and smaller. After the construction of the A4, the motorway became the new border between Leiden and Zoeterwoude. So far the community has successfully defended itself against its possible dissolution.
