Vlaardingen ( listen ? / I ) is a city and a municipality in the Netherlands , province of South Holland . Their total area is about 26.7 km². On January 31, 2019, Vlaardingen had 72,506 inhabitants. Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

Vlaardingen is located on the north bank of the Nieuwe Waterweg canal between Rotterdam and the North Sea . The municipality borders on Westland to the northwest , Maassluis to the west and Schiedam to the east . It is located on the railway line between Hoek van Holland - Rotterdam and on the motorways from Rotterdam to the Europoort port area and Maassluis.

Due to its proximity to the port of Rotterdam, Vlaardingen has a lot of industry, especially metal processing companies and chemical plants. Transport and other logistics companies are also based in the municipality. Vlaardingen also has several research laboratories. The city has many schools and a large hospital.

history

Between 3500 and 2500 BC Neolithic people lived here . Around 800 AD, St. Willibrord is said to have converted a group of Frisians who had recently settled here to Christianity .

The Count of Holland , Dietrich III. , had a fortification built here in the year of the Battle of Vlaardingen in 1018 , from which customs were levied. The hinterland, the Schieland , was completely surrounded by dikes around 1250.

Vlaardingen received town charter in 1273 and since then, until around 1950, has been a very important port for the deep-sea fishing fleet . Like Schiedam , Vlaardingen benefited from the boom in the port of Rotterdam after 1950, while North Sea fishermen settled elsewhere or ceased operations.

Attractions

In the city center there are several architectural monuments from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, including the Great Church with a city scale and the town hall.

There are several small museums in Vlaardingen, including the Vlaardingen Museum (formerly the Fisheries Museum) in a stately 18th century mansion in the Old Harbor (Oude Haven) with a replica of the wooden harbor crane from 1858 with double reel drive. Before that, the herring logger "VL 92 Balder", built in 1912, is anchored as a museum ship.

Annemiek Jetten ( PvdA ) was the acting mayor of the community from January 9, 2017 to December 5, 2019 . The councilors include Frans Hoogendijk ( ONS Vlaardingen ), Arnout Hoekstra ( SP ), Bart Bikkers ( VVD ), Bart de Leede ( GroenLinks ), Jacky Silos-Knaap ( CDA ) and the municipal secretary Anneke Knol-van Leeuwen .
