Location and economy

Alblasserdam is located in the west of the Alblasserwaard polder . The Noord river arm separates the place from the southwestern neighboring communities Ridderkerk , Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht and Papendrecht . In Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht there is an exit from the A15 motorway ( Rotterdam / Dordrecht - Arnhem / Nijmegen ). From there you can first reach the industrial site and then the center of Alblasserdam. In this motorway, a tunnel runs under the Noord immediately south of Alblasserdam . If you don't have a car, you have to travel to Ridderkerk via Rotterdam or Dordrecht . There you can take the bus to Alblasserdam.

In Alblasserdam there is significant industry connected with shipping on the Rhine and the nearby port of Rotterdam . a. a shipyard and several metal processing companies.

history

The history of Alblasserdam begins around 700 years ago. The name is first mentioned in a Melis Stoke chronicle from 1299. At that time the Alblasserdam and Oud-Ablas were merged into one unit. The old center of the village was badly hit by bombs on May 11, 1940 when the Second World War broke out in the Netherlands. The historical Kerkstraat and the characteristic dyke development were largely not affected.

In the history of Alblasserdam, water has always played a major role. The name of the place is derived from the river Alblas (east of the village). A dam was built there. The river De Noord has been of great importance to the growth of the place. It became a convenient place for industry to settle. However, the proximity to the water also had disadvantages. In the years between 1350 and 1821 the Alblasserwaard was under water 32 times. The last major flood in February 1953 also hit part of Alblasserdam. Since the dike was strengthened and the lock refurbishment, there is no longer any direct danger from the water.
