Topography of South Holland |
Zuid-Holland ( German South Holland ) is a western province of the Netherlands on the North Sea coast . It is the most densely populated and highly industrialized area in the Netherlands . As of January 31, 2019, the province had 3,676,579 inhabitants.

Adjacent provinces are Noord-Holland in the north, Utrecht and Gelderland in the east, Noord-Brabant in the southeast and Zeeland in the south. In the west the province borders on the North Sea .
Important cities are The Hague ( seat of government, International Court of Justice ) and the seaport city of Rotterdam . The cities of Leiden , Delft , Dordrecht , Schiedam and Gouda have a historical center.
To the southeast of Rotterdam are the Kinderdijk mills , which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Rivers and canals include the Nieuwe Maas , the Nieuwe Waterweg , the Oude Maas , the Haringvliet and the Hollands Diep . The majority of the population is concentrated in the Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden metropolitan area. The rest of the province is comparatively sparsely populated, agricultural, and in the course of the coastal dunes in the north it is also very touristyː Katwijk and Nordwijk are popular and quite contemplative tourist destinations with a focus on beach holidays.
In the south of the province there are many islands in the Rhine delta , which are connected by bridges and dams:

history
The county of Holland emerged at the beginning of the 10th century. Holland was the richest and most influential of the seven provinces that seceded Spanish rule in 1581 and formed the Republic of the Seven United Provinces , the forerunner of today's Kingdom of the Netherlands .
In order to limit the dominance of the province of Holland in Dutch politics, it was divided into the provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland when the constitution was amended in 1840 .

The Provincial Parliament ( Dutch Provinciale Staten ) has its seat in the Provinciehuis in the provincial capital, The Hague . According to the population in the province, the parliament has 55 seats.
In the provincial election on March 20, 2019, the parties obtained the following shares of the vote: FvD 17.43% (11 seats), VVD 15.66% (10 seats), GroenLinks 9.06% (5 seats), D66 8.53% ( 5 seats), PvdA 7.82% (4 seats), CDA 7.74% (4 seats), PVV 7.00% (4 seats), ChristenUnie 5.57% (3 seats), 50PLUS 4.45% ( 2 seats), PvdD 4.37% (2 seats), SP 4.12% (2 seats), SGP 3.90% (2 seats), DENK 2.73% (1 seat), other 1.63%. The turnout was 54.49%.
The next provincial election will take place on March 22, 2023.
At the head of the province is the king's commissioner . Since December 2013 this has been the Christian Democrat Jaap Smit . The college van Gedeputeerde Staten , i.e. the government, has been formed since 2011 by a coalition of right- wing liberals , left-wing liberals , Christian democrats and socialists .
