The Forum voor Democratie ( FVD , German  Forum for Democracy ) is an EU-skeptical and national-conservative party in the Netherlands .

history

Forum voor Democratie was founded in 2015 as a think tank under the direction of Thierry Baudet . It emerged from the GeenPeil action group that pushed through the referendum on the association agreement between the European Union and Ukraine in April 2016 .

In the election to the Second Chamber in 2017 , she received two seats.

In the local elections in March 2018, the party only ran in Amsterdam and won three of the 45 seats on the local city council. In 2019, she won 12 of the 75 seats in the First Chamber of the States General in the provincial elections . With this election, the previously ruling coalition of VVD , D66 , CDA and ChristenUnie lost its majority in the First Chamber.

In the 2019 European elections, the party achieved the fourth-best result with around 11%. According to analyzes, many voters have migrated from the PVV (4.1%, previously 13.3%) to the FVD.

ideology

One of the party's main concerns is to break through what is known as a “party cartel, ” in which the established parties share power among themselves and - although they claim to be opponents - pursue the same goals. In addition, the party promises direct democracy through binding referendums as well as elected mayors and an elected prime minister . The party advocates a government made up of professionals .

The party rejects the European Union and fights for a referendum on Dutch EU membership. It does not want to transfer new powers to the EU, instead it wants to return power to the nation states. Furthermore, Dutch culture and “Dutch values” are to be protected by law. The party advocates the reinstatement of border controls and positions itself against so-called mass immigration. She wants to invest in a capable professional army, expand the National Reservist Corps and reverse cuts in the defense budget. In addition, the party has plans to reorganize the Dutch public service broadcaster, the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO).

In economic policy, the party is an advocate of increasing the tax allowance , abolishing gift and inheritance tax and a radical simplification of the tax system. The party also advocates promoting ecological sustainability, the environment and innovation through tax cuts for renewable energies , the sharing economy and organic farming, as well as investing in digital infrastructure , reducing regulation and ensuring data protection . She also wants to make improvements in primary and secondary education that focus on the quality of teaching staff.

Known members

Most of the candidates have no experience in politics. The list of candidates included medical professionals, financial experts and a member of the Dutch armed forces.
