The Partia Republikane Shqiptare ( Albanian for "Albanian Republican Party"; acronym: PRSh ), or Partia Republikane (acronym: PR ) for short , is a right-wing political party in Albania . Since the parliamentary elections of March 1992, the PR has always been represented by at least one MP in Kuvendi i Shqipërisë . From 2013 to 2017 she was in the opposition . In the 2017 parliamentary election , however, she lost all seats. The party leader is Fatmir Mediu .

history

The Partia Republikane Shqiptare was founded in January 1991 under the leadership of the writer Sabri Godo (1929–2011), who also became its first chairman. After the Democratic Party , this was the second party to be founded in Albania after the anti-communist revolution in autumn 1990. As the name suggests, the Republicans chose the US Republicans as their political role model. They classified themselves as right of center on the political spectrum .

After the parliamentary elections of March 1992, the first truly free elections, in which the party won 3.8% of the vote, it entered a coalition with the Democrats. As a much smaller partner, however, it was hardly able to shape government policy. After the Democratic government was overthrown by the 1996-97 riots , the PR went into opposition. Her only MP, Sabri Godo, worked intensively on the drafting of the new Albanian constitution and, in the constitutional committee, often mediated between the representatives of the warring socialists and democrats.

Before the 2001 elections, the PR joined the Alliance for Victory (alb. Bashkimi për Fitoren ) led by the Democrats. This connection of the right-wing parties should break the socialist majority and bring about a change of government. However, this only succeeded in 2005. In these elections, the PR was able to achieve its best result so far, not least due to clever strategic agreements with the Democrats, and moved into parliament with eleven members.

After the parliamentary elections in 2005, she joined the ruling coalition led by the Democrats and appointed some cabinet members. In the 2009 elections, due to a change in the law to the detriment of the small parties ( threshold clause ), she was only able to gain one seat, which her party chairman, Fatmir Mediu , has occupied since 1997 . From 2013 to 2017 she had three members in parliament. In the 2017 parliamentary election, however, she lost all MPs.
