history
Emergence
In 2002 the Partia Socialiste e Shqipërisë (PS) came out as the winner of the parliamentary election and formed the new government under its then party chairman Fatos Nano , which still included the small agricultural and environmental party . The cabinet envisaged Fatos Nano as prime minister and Ilir Meta as its deputy and foreign minister. But already in the second half of 2003 there were first differences between nano and meta. The latter criticized above all the lack of democratic processes within the Socialist Party, which, among other things, slowed down the process of integration into the structures of NATO and the European Union . Eventually Meta resigned from all his posts and went into the extra-parliamentary opposition. However, he remained with his supporters in the PS.
The Drejt sfidave të integrimit movement “On the Challenges of Integration”, initiated by Meta, remained a political movement in the party for about a year. And when she presented a reform of the party and the form of government in the country at a party conference in Tirana and this was rejected, preparations began for the establishment of a new political party.
Foundation and beginnings
On September 6, 2004 the Lëvizja Socialiste për Integrim was founded with the support of around 500 MPs, intellectuals and other sponsors. The LSI took over criticism of the widespread nepotism and corruption under the Nano government.
In April 2005 the LSI was the first political party in Albania to organize an internal party election to determine the party leader. With the motto Një anëtar, një votë “One member, one vote”, the LSI went down in the history of Albanian pluralism.
In the 2005 election campaign, the LSI was the only left-wing party to oppose the ruling socialists. In the elections she received 8.4% of the vote and won five seats. She remained in the opposition. In the 2007 local elections, however, she entered into a coalition with the socialists after Edi Rama prevailed as party chairman and succeeded Nano.
Coalition with the Democrats 2009–2013
In the elections in June 2009, the LSI received 5.6% of the vote and was represented by four members of the Kuvendi i Shqipërisë . Against initial resistance from within the party, party chairman Ilir Meta pushed through a coalition with the Democratic Party in order, according to the LSI, to prevent a deep political crisis and enable integration to continue. Meta entered the government in September 2009 as Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sali Berisha . With Dritan Prifti , the LSI also provided the Minister for Economic Affairs, Trade and Energy. In September 2010 Meta moved from the office of foreign minister to minister for economy, trade and energy in order to have to spend less time abroad and to be able to focus more on the development of the party. LSI MP Edmond Haxhinasto became the new Foreign Minister .
In the run-up to the parliamentary elections in Albania in 2013 , Ilir Meta and his party left the coalition with the Democrats that had been formed since 2009 in order to switch to the Socialists. In the elections, the Socialists under Edi Rama, together with the LSI, achieved a clear majority. Between 2013 and 2017 they formed the government in the Rama I cabinet .
Coalition with the Socialists 2013–2017
In this government, the LSI, which had received 10.4% of the valid votes, provided 6 of the 19 ministers with Nasip Naço , Edmond Panariti , Klajda Gjosha , Edmond Haxhinasto and Lefter Koka . Ilir Meta took over the office of President of Parliament .
