Koha Jonë ( Albanian  Our Time ) is an Albanian daily newspaper and media company based in Tirana . Once the leading newspaper in the country, the circulation has shrunk to a few thousand copies (2001: 8000 copies, 2008: 2500 copies).

history

On May 11, 1991 - a few months after the fall of communism in Albania - Nikollë Lesi and Aleksandër Frangaj published the first edition of the newspaper in the northern Albanian city of Lezha . After a few months they moved to the capital Tirana. Lesi and Frangaj were the newspaper's first editors-in-chief.

Founded in 1991, Koha Jonë became one of the most influential newspapers in the country and attracted many nationally famous publicists . In 1992 the success continued and the newspaper joined well-known names in the Albanian press such as Ben Blushi , Armand Shkullaku , Andi Bushati , Andi Bejtja and Frrok Cupi . Over time, Koha Jonë took a rather critical position towards President Sali Berisha and the governments and became the opposition in the country. In 1994 the newspaper reached a national print run of 73,000 copies, which was never exceeded by the Albanian press.

In 1996, Nikollë Lesi became the company's sole shareholder after buying up 40 percent of his partner Aleksandër Frangaj.

During the 1997 lottery uprising, on March 2, the first night after the state of emergency was declared, the Tirana headquarters were burned down. The perpetrators could not be identified.

After 1997, the newspaper's influence and weight deteriorated until 2007, until Lesi sold his company to Aleksandër Frangaj, his former partner, and Koha Jonë thus became part of the TV Klan media group .
