Duilio Arigoni (born December 6, 1928 in Lugano ; † June 10, 2020 ) was a Swiss chemist .

Life

He studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich . In 1955 he wrote his doctoral thesis ("On configurative relationships in steroid and terpene compounds") with Oskar Jeger . From 1961 Arigoni was a private lecturer, from 1962 associate professor and from 1967 to 1996 full professor for special organic chemistry at the Laboratory for Organic Chemistry at the ETH Zurich; in 1999 he retired . He then worked as AD White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University (1980 to 1987), as Alexander Todd Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge (1981) and as RB Woodward Visiting Professor at Harvard University (1983).

His research areas were bio-organic stereochemistry and the biosynthesis of natural substances (including vitamin B12 ). In his studies he significantly expanded the insight into the dynamics of enzymatic processes, especially their stereochemistry.

Arigoni was honored with the Marcel Benoist Prize for his work in 1991. He died in June 2020 at the age of 91.
