Joshua Jortner (born March 14, 1933 in Tarnów , Poland ) is an Israeli chemist who deals with physical chemistry and theoretical chemistry.

Life

Jortner came to Israel in 1940 and studied at the Hebrew University from 1951 (master's degree in physical chemistry 1955). 1955 to 1959 he did his military service in the Israeli army. In 1959 he was at the Hebrew University in Gabriel Stein with work Basic electron transfer processes in ionic solutions doctorate . In 1961 he was a lecturer there. From 1962 to 1964 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago , where he was visiting assistant professor from 1965/66 and part-time professor from 1966 to 1972.

He was visiting professor at the University of Copenhagen , the University of California, Berkeley and the École normal supérieure .

Jortner is known for investigations into energy transfer and storage, for example in photosynthesis and biopolymers, and investigations into the dynamics of radiationless transitions with applications in ultra-short-term physics and laser chemistry.

Jortner is the author and co-author of over 720 scientific articles (2010).

In 2008 he received the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. He has seven honorary doctorates from the University of Paris VI , the Weizmann Institute , the Technical University of Munich , the Free University of Berlin and the Humboldt University of Berlin . He received the Israel Prize , the Rothschild Prize , the Weizmann Prize, the Curie Medal of the Polish Chemical Society, the Lise Meitner Research Prize, and the EMET Prize .

Jortner is a member of the Israeli, Dutch, Romanian, Russian, Polish and Danish Academies of Science, the Indian National Science Academy, the Leopoldina , the Academia Europaea , the National Academy of Sciences , the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. From 1980 to 1986 he was Vice President and from 1986 to 1995 President of the Israel Academy of Sciences .

He is married and has a son and a daughter.
