Robert Langer
Robert Samuel Langer junior (born August 29, 1948 in Albany , New York ) is an American chemical engineer and professor at MIT .
Life
Robert Samuel Langer Jr. was born as the son of Robert Samuel sr. and Mary Langer, b. Swartz, born. He studied chemical engineering , received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1970 and his PhD in 1974 with Clark K. Colton at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After postdoctoral research with Judah Folkman from 1974 to 1977 in the cancer department of the Boston Children's Hospital, he was assistant professor from 1978 to 1981, adjunct professor from 1981 to 1985, professor from 1985 to 1989, and from 1989 to 2004 Kenneth J. Germeshausen professor of chemical engineering and medical technology at MIT . He has been an institute professor there since 2005.
Langer's research lies in the area between biotechnology and materials science . His main focus is on the development of polymers that allow the controlled release of the drugs embedded in them over long periods of time. By lowering the doses administered, side effects can be reduced. He's also exploring uses like insulin delivery , cancer-fighting agents , growth factors, and vaccines . He is also developing systems whose release rates can be changed magnetically, enzymatically or by ultrasound, and is pursuing new approaches to overcome physiological barriers such as the blood-brain barrier , the intestinal wall , the blood-air barrier or the skin . Another area of Langer's work is tissue engineering .
Langer has been married to Laura Feigenbaum since 1988, with whom he has three children. His hobbies are magic and jogging.
