The National Medal of Science is an award given by the President of the United States of America each year to up to 20 scientists who make outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the behavioral and social sciences , biology , chemistry , engineering , of mathematics and physics . The medal, which was founded in 1959 and awarded for the first time four years later, went to 501 people up to and including the winners for 2012.
