Joseph Leonard Goldstein (born April 18, 1940 in Sumter , South Carolina , USA ) is an American geneticist and Nobel Prize winner for medicine . He received it with Michael S. Brown "for their discoveries regarding the regulation of the cholesterol metabolism"

Life

Joseph L. Goldstein studied chemistry at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia ( Bachelor in 1962) and medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center with an MD degree in 1966. From 1966 to 1968 he worked as a research scientist at the Massachusetts General Hospiral in Boston and befriended Michael S. Brown during this time. At the Southwestern Medical Center, where Goldstein is now a professor, he carried out the work with Brown in the 1970s for which both were honored with the Nobel Prize in 1985.
