Paul Christian Lauterbur (born May 6, 1929 in Sidney , Ohio , † March 27, 2007 in Urbana , Illinois ) was an American chemist and inventor of Luxembourg descent. In 2003 he and Peter Mansfield were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the development of magnetic resonance imaging (magnetic resonance imaging).

Life

He studied chemistry in Cleveland and received his PhD in 1962 under Christopher Dean at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. In 1965 he received a research grant ( Sloan Research Fellowship ) from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation . From 1969 to 1985 he was Professor of Chemistry at the State University of New York University at Stony Brook . From 1985 to 1990 he was a professor at the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . Since 1985 he has also been director of the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Laboratory .

Lauterbur has received the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research (1984), the Charles F. Kettering Prize from the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation (1985), a Gairdner Foundation International Award (1985), the X-ray plaque (1987), the European Magnetic Resonance Award (1986), the Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science (1991), the Dickson Prize in Science (1992), the Kyoto Prize (1994), the NAS Award for Chemistry in Service to Society (2001 ) and the technology prize of the Eduard Rhein Foundation (2003) and has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1985 and of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1992 .
