The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is a philanthropic, non-profit organization in the United States , based in New York City , established in 1934 by Alfred P. Sloan Jr. , then President and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors .

The foundation's programs and interests are in the fields of science and technology , living standards and economics , education and professional careers in science and technology. The total amount of the foundation's capital at the end of 2015 was 1.8 billion US dollars .

In 2000, the Sloan Foundation launched a national bioterrorism protection program to raise awareness about the importance of terrorism and made 40 grants totaling over $ 17 million. Other more recent projects partially or fully sponsored by the Sloan Foundation include the Encyclopedia of Life , the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the Census of Marine Life , including the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) . The Sloan Work and Family Research Network at Boston College supports research and education in working families. The Sloan Fellowships are annual grants and grants given to more than 100 young researchers and university faculties to pursue research projects in science, business, neuroscience , research on computers, and molecular biology .

In March 2008 and January 2017, the foundation announced a donation of three million dollars each to the Wikimedia Foundation , the umbrella organization of Wikipedia . With the Sloan Fellows program, young academics, predominantly from the management sector, are promoted after they have entered professional life.

Board members currently also include Harold T. Shapiro , Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University , and Robert M. Solow , who was awarded the 1987 Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics .

In addition to the support provided by the Sloan Foundation, the $ 20,000 Alfred P. Sloan Prize has been awarded at the Sundance Film Festival since 2003 to filmmakers who present subjects or people from the fields of science, research, mathematics or technical development in their work.
