Randy Schekman
Randy Wayne Schekman (born December 30, 1948 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American biochemist and professor at the University of California, Berkeley . In 2013 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with James Rothman and Thomas Südhof .
Life
Schekman earned a bachelor's degree in molecular biology from the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles , California in 1970 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry with Arthur Kornberg at Stanford University in Stanford , California. He then held a post-doctoral position in the Department of Biology at the University of California, San Diego in San Diego , California, before becoming an assistant professor (initially Assistant Professor , later Associate Professor ) in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley , California. Since 1989 he has held a full professorship for molecular and cellular biology there. In 1999 he was President of the American Society for Cell Biology .
Act
Schekman and his group have gained numerous insights into the regulation and handling of protein transport processes within cells as well as their underlying genes and gene products . The aim of the research was biological membranes and their production processes. Fundamental knowledge was gained from yeast , but the corresponding mechanisms could also be demonstrated in higher organisms. Disturbances in these processes have been identified as the cause of various hereditary diseases and other genetic disorders.
