Career

The microbiologist Marshall is known for showing that Helicobacter pylori bacteria are the cause of most stomach ulcers . He refuted the decades-long assumption that ulcers are mainly caused by stress, spicy food, etc.

The Helicobacter - pylori theory was initially rejected by many scientists who believe that bacteria in the acidic environment of the stomach acid could not survive. To prove otherwise, Marshall undertook a self-experiment in 1984 and drank a test tube of the bacteria. A short time later he developed severe gastritis , which he healed with antibiotics .

In 1994 he received the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize , in 1995 the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research and in 1996 a Gairdner Foundation International Award . In 1997 he was awarded the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize , in 1998 the AH Heineken Prize for Medicine and the Buchanan Medal of the Royal Society , and in 2002 the Keio Medical Science Prize . In December 2005 he and John Robin Warren received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of Helicobacter pylori . He currently works at Shanghai East Hospital and heads the "Marhall International Diagnosis and Treatment Center for Digestive Diseases"

In 2008, Marshall was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .
