Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a city in western Australia with around 30,800 inhabitants. It emerged from the twin towns of Kalgoorlie and Boulder, which both emerged as mining towns on the Golden Mile . The place is about 595 km east of Perth in the Goldfields-Esperance region . The name Kalgoorlie comes from the language of the Aborigines , more precisely from the word Karlkurla ( pronounced: gall-gall-la ), which means something like "place of the shiny pears". Meant are the fruits of Marsdenia australis .

history

Because of the great Australian gold rush and because Patrick Hannan found gold here in 1893, Kalgoorlie was built as a gold rush settlement in 1895. Its importance as a gold rush town was increased with the construction of the railway line to Perth in 1896. Kalgoorlie is located on the Golden Mile, one of the largest gold veins in the world.
A problem at the time was Kalgoorlie's location in the middle of the outback , which made it difficult to obtain water. In 1898 the engineer Charles O'Connor developed a 540 km long water transport system made of steel pipes and with eight pumping stations, called the Golden Pipeline . It has been transporting water from the mountains near Perth to a reservoir, the Mount Charlotte Reservoir, since 1903.

The sister city of Boulder was also created in the time of the gold diggers, initially as a warehouse directly at the mines.

Attractions

Golden Mile

In the northeast of the city lies the Golden Mile, one of the largest gold veins in the world. There are still numerous historical buildings from the gold rush era and the Super Pit gold mine, which is still in operation today. The commented ride on the rattler of the Golden Loopline Railway, as the miners call the rattling railway, takes an hour from Boulder City Station. It leads past many points of the huge mine.

Hannan Street

Named after Paddy Hannan, who was the first to find gold here, the main street is now one of the tourist attractions of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Most of the houses on Hannan Street, the width of which is due to the fact that entire camel caravans used to have to be able to turn around here, date back to the turn of the century and still reflect the charm and glamor of the great gold rush. The historic town hall from 1908 is worth a visit. The Kalgoorlie Court House is also located on Hannan Street . It was built as a post office in 1899 and extensively renovated and restored in the 2010s.

Hannan's North Tourist Mine

The former gold mine would still be operational, but today it only serves as a tourist magnet. The mine, through which visitors are driven in a small train, is located directly on the Golden Mile. The program includes, for example, the pouring of a "gold bar" (it is much cheaper copper ), the presentation of the gold extraction process and traditional gold panning.

Super pit gold mine

The 5 km wide, 1.5 km long and 360 meters deep super-pit gold mine is the largest gold mine in Australia and extracts 850,000 ounces (28 tons) of gold annually in open pit mining. There is a good view of the mine from the Super Pit Lookout (Boulder Block Road) and it can also be visited.

Museum of the Goldfields

The museum has extensive exhibitions on the city's history and gold mining. There is also a pub in the museum, the British Arms . It is said to be the smallest bar in Western Australia.

Coolgardie

The town of Coolgardie 40 km west of Kalgoorlies was founded in 1892 as a result of gold discoveries. In its heyday 15,000 people lived here, today there are only 700. The main source of income today is tourism. The historic train station from 1896, three museums and a cemetery that testifies to the gold rush can be visited.
