John Cornell
John Cornell (born February 2, 1941 in Kalgoorlie , Western Australia , † July 23, 2021 in Byron Bay , New South Wales ) was an Australian director , screenwriter and film producer . He became internationally known through the films Crocodile Dundee - A Crocodile to Kiss , Crocodile Dundee II and Almost an Angel .
life and career
John Cornell was born in 1941 in Kalgoorlie, Australia, and grew up in Bunbury in the state of Western Australia. His first professional focus was journalism, covering local events in Perth for The Daily News . Since the beginning of the 1970s he worked in the film business in various functions, including director, screenwriter and producer.
In 1971, John Cornell had switched from newspaper writing to television, where he took a job as a producer for the nightly national news program A Current Affair . It was there that John Cornell grew into the role of silent partner in the Paul Hogan success story. As a producer for the television news magazine, John Cornell had spotted Paul Hogan on the new talent show New Faces and signed him as a comedian and actor. In 1972 John Cornell and Paul Hogan founded JP Productions . In 1977, Cornell finally produced the television series The Paul Hogan Show for his longtime friend .
In 1986 John Cornell achieved worldwide success with the romantic adventure comedy Crocodile Dundee - A crocodile to kiss with Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski in the lead roles in his double function as screenwriter and producer of the film. The director was Peter Faiman from Melbourne . John Cornell had offered the film to 20th Century Fox under the leadership of Rupert Murdoch for distribution, but they turned it down on the grounds that the film would not work in Hollywood . In Paramount Pictures finally a rental place. The film grossed over $ 300 million worldwide as a blockbuster . The next episode in the success story of the charming Australian daredevil was directed by Cornell himself with the sequel Crocodile Dundee II in 1988. As director and producer of the film, he placed significantly more emphasis on action and drama in the second part.
In 1990 he realized another film project with Paul Hogan and his wife Linda Kozlowski with the romantic drama Almost an Angel .
John Cornell had two daughters and lived in Australia with his wife Delvene Delaney.
He died of complications from Parkinson's disease in July 2021 at the age of 80 .
