Byron Bay is a seaside resort on the north coast of the Australian state of New South Wales with 9,246 inhabitants and is located at the easternmost point of the Australian mainland ( Cape Byron ), approx. 800 km north of Sydney and 200 kilometers south of Brisbane . The nearest airport is about 36.5 kilometers south in Ballina .

The city is named after John Byron , grandfather of the poet Lord Byron , an 18th century British captain and circumnavigator . In the prefecture of Byron Shire about 32,000 people live (as of 2006).

A lighthouse built in 1901, the Cape Byron Light , can be seen from afar and is one of the main attractions of this small town. Due to the large and very long open bay, Byron Bay is an ideal surfer's paradise .

From 1954 to 1962 whales were hunted in the bay of Cap Byron and processed on the southern edge of the city in the Byron Bay Whaling Station , which is close to the shore . This whaling station was abandoned and Byron Bay is now also known as a destination for whale watching , as Cape Byron is regularly visited by humpback whales .

The city has an alternative reputation in Australia as many dropouts and artists have settled here. Because of the alternative reputation and the proximity to Nimbin (45 kilometers) it is a popular destination for backpackers .

The important open-air music festival East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival has been held every Easter since 1989.

Byron Beach was named the sexiest beach in the world by Forbes magazine.
