Ballina is an Australian city in New South Wales with a population of 15,963. It is located at the mouth of the Richmond River about 40 km south of Byron Bay . Ballina was founded in 1842 under the name Deptford . Irish settlers adapted the name balloonah or bullenah (Aboriginal for "place where there are oysters " or "blood that runs from the injured" - as a possible allusion to a massacre of Aborigines in 1852) to Ballina (see Ballina in Mayo , Ireland ).

The average temperature in summer is 28 ° C and in winter 21 ° C. Ballina's industrial focus is on tourism , fishing , sugar cane cultivation and the cultivation of macadamia nuts.
