Coordinates: 28 ° 50 ' S , 153 ° 32' O Ballina Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 484.9 km² and has about 42,000 inhabitants.
Ballina is located in the far northeast of the state on the Pacific coast about 750 km north of Sydney and 200 km south of Brisbane . The area comprises 49 hamlets and hamlets, including Alstonville, Ballina , Empire Vale, Knockrow, Lennox Head, Teven, Wardell, Wollongbar and parts of Broadwater and Newrybar. The headquarters of the Shire Council is in the town of Ballina, which has about 16,500 inhabitants.
Ballina Shire is one of the fastest growing areas in the North Coast region - three quarters of the population are under 60. The district lives mainly from tourism and fishing, but also produces sugar, macadamia nuts, cattle, avocado and stone fruits.
The coastal town of Lennox Head with around 6,100 inhabitants is a center for water sports enthusiasts.

The Bellina Shire Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the three wards (three each from A, B and C ward). These three districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
