Pacentro is an Italian commune with 1129 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of L'Aquila , Abruzzo region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy) and borders directly on the province of Pescara .

Location and description

Pacentro

Pacentro is located above Sulmona on a plateau on the slope of the Montagne del Morrone in the Majella National Park . The neighboring towns are Campo di Giove , Cansano , Fara San Martino ( CH ), Lama dei Peligni (CH), Palena (CH), Sant'Eufemia a Maiella ( PE ), Sulmona and Taranta Peligna (CH).

The place is characterized by old buildings from the 16th to 19th centuries. Particularly noteworthy is the church of Santa Maria della Misericordia from the 16th century and the ruins of a castle from the 14th century.

The ruins of the Cantelmo-Caldora fort date from the 11th to 15th centuries and a. from three towers, two of which are relatively high. The building was badly damaged in the 1915 earthquake and ruthlessly restored in 1964. The masonry was negligently attached with cement, and in some cases even replaced.

The first written mention of Pacentro goes back to the 8th century. In the Middle Ages the place grew around a castle built there, the ruins of which can still be visited today. In 1911 Pacentro peaked at 4,000 inhabitants. Then the population decreased again, especially in the years after the Second World War , numerous residents emigrated to the USA and Australia. The grandparents of the pop singer Madonna come from Pacentro.
