history

The history of the village of Sant'Eufemia a Maiella began in 1064, when Count Berardo donated a piece of land to a local feudal lord of the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. The village was first mentioned in writing in 1140 under the name Santa Fumia . In the twentieth century, the parish suffered an agricultural and pastoral crisis that led to a gradual decline in population. In 1951 the community still had 1,453 inhabitants, by 1981 the population had fallen to 474. The reason for this is the emigration to the larger towns and cities.
