Moscufo |
Moscufo is an Italian commune with 3146 inhabitants in the province of Pescara in Abruzzo . The place on the hill is about twenty kilometers from the coast and the city of Pescara and still has many medieval building elements.
history
The origin of the name Moscufo is not entirely clear. It was quite likely that it was the seat of a Lombard nobleman, around whom a fortified village developed over time. However, there is evidence that the Moscufo was already settled in antiquity . In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the dominion of the Piccolomini and Figliola families.
Attractions
The remains of a weak city fortification (gates) can still be seen today. Also worth seeing are the Palazzo Ferri and Palazzo Orsini and especially the church of Santa Maria del Lago.
Chiesa di San Cristoforo
It is the main church in the middle of the village. The church building has a very short nave. Inside there are pictures, frescoes and especially ornamentation from the 17th century.
Chiesa di Santa Maria del Lago
The church of Santa Maria del Lago belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria and has medieval frescoes . It is located just outside of Moscufo at the cemetery in the direction of Pescara. The foundation walls are from the ninth century; the church is mentioned in a document in 969. It is a very small Romanesque church with a very large multicolored pulpit from 1156. The pulpit from the workshop of Roberto di Ruggero is the only still complete lectern from this period. It is one of the region's most important art treasures, as even the ornaments, the numerous different colored figures by the famous artist Nicodemo da Guardiagrele , are well preserved. The frescoes are the same age, but in rather poor condition. The appearance of the current church dates from 1733 when it was renovated.
The church is normally locked, but you can get the key (as of summer 2004) without any problems in a meeting house run by religious sisters. It is towards Moscufo, first street on the left, again left, the first house on the left, "La Casa di Manuelle".
Viticulture
In the municipality of vines are varieties Montepulciano for the DOC - wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown.
