Caracciolo Castle in Tocco da Casauria

history

Tocco da Casauria was first mentioned in a document in 872. The Church of Sant'Eustachio and the Castle of Caracciolo were built in the 13th century . A large part of the village was destroyed in the earthquakes in 1456 and 1706.

Attractions

The church of Sant'Eustachio was built in the 12th century. The building was partially destroyed by the earthquake of 1706 and immediately rebuilt. Embedded in the facade are two magnificent high reliefs from the 16th century. The interior consists of three naves.

Caracciolo Castle was built between 1187 and 1220. After the castle was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1456, the towers and courtyards were rebuilt in the Renaissance style with a rectangular shape. At that time the Scali-Caracciolo family from Scafa lived in the castle, today the castle is owned by the municipality.

Viticulture

In the municipality of vines are varieties Montepulciano for the DOC - wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown. A lot of olive oil is also produced in Tocco da Casauria.
