Denominazione di origine controllata , DOC for short , is a "controlled designation of origin" for wine from Italy , similar to the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in France, the quality wine of certain growing areas (Q. b. A.) in Germany or the Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) . The official description according to the EU regulation is:

“Wines with designation of origin: the geographical name of a wine-growing region characterized by a particular production; the name is used to denote a well-known quality product, which owes its properties to the geographical conditions and human influences. The law defines the special traditional term 'DOC' for the Italian names in order to explain the aforementioned concept of the very high-quality and traditional designation of origin. "

In terms of quality levels , the DOC wines are above the Indicazione Geografica Tipica wines (IGT wines) and below the DOCG wines.

history

This legally regulated and controlled designation of origin was introduced in 1963 with the aim of achieving a sustainable improvement in the quality of the wines and balsamic vinegar produced . Since 1992, the various national quality seals in Europe have resulted in the protected designation of origin (PDO seal) under EU law , but are often used alone or in parallel because of their greater awareness. The DOC criteria, which have remained unchanged since 1963, were also adjusted in 1992 in order to also comply with the regulations of the PDO seal.

The EU wine market regulation of August 2009 standardized the designation of origin for wine in line with food law and redefined the quality system. The new terms are Denominazione d'Origine Protetta (DOP) instead of DOC and DOCG and Indicazione Geografica Protetta (IGP) instead of IGT . The traditional names can still be used, however, as they are grandfathered .

criteria

In addition to the permitted yield per hectare, the statutory regulation also includes the permitted growing areas and permitted grape varieties. Wines with a DOC or DOCG seal may not be filled into containers with a volume greater than five liters.
