Denominazione d'Origine Protetta , or DOP for short , is the Italian seal for products with a protected designation of origin, it corresponds to the French AOC , in EC law the protected designation of origin (PDO) .

In the area of ​​wine marketing, the DOP seal has officially replaced the two appellations DOC and DOCG since 2009 . These previous quality levels can still be used, however, as they are grandfathered .

The structure of the Italian wine qualities can be represented as a pyramid - with the DOP qualities at the top.
