Evgeni Igorewitsch Kissin ( Russian Евгений Игоревич Кисин , transl. To ISO 9 : Evgenij Igorevič Kisin; born October 10, 1971 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a Russian pianist and composer . His first name is mostly written Evgeny in English , in German mostly Jewgenij or Jewgeni , on German CD releases also Yevgeny . In addition to Russian citizenship , Kissin has also had British citizenship since 2002 and Israeli citizenship since 2013 .

Life

Musical career

Yevgeny Kissin was born the son of a piano teacher and an engineer. His mother had already given piano lessons to his sister Alla, who was ten years older than him. At the age of two years and two months, Yevgeny also began to play the piano . At the age of six he attended the Gnessin Institute in Moscow and took lessons from Anna Kantor . She has remained his only teacher. Kissin made his debut as a soloist with orchestra at the age of ten with the Ulyanovsk orchestra with Mozart's piano concerto KV 466 . At the age of eleven he gave his first solo concert with the piano concertos No. 1 and No. 2 by Frédéric Chopin . This earned him the reputation of a child prodigy . When New Year's Eve concert of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1988 Kissin played under the baton of Herbert von Karajan , the B flat minor Concerto by Tchaikovsky , reaching his international breakthrough.

Private

In 1991 Kissin left Russia with his family. He then lived with his parents, his older sister and his teacher Anna Kantor alternately in London and New York.

Aware of his Jewish roots, he has read so far into Yiddish poetry that he has an almost perfect command of the language. He first publicly recited her poetry at the Verbier Festival in 2002 . He has also written some poems in Yiddish himself. In one of these poems he raves about the “tremendous treasures of the Yiddish language”: he only learned a small part of them, but every word is a treasure for him and he wants to “feel the words with all of his senses”.

In March 2017, Kissin married Karina Arzumanova, whom he had known from childhood, in Prague . Arzumanova had lived in Prague since 2002 and raised three children there.

Works

Awards

Kissin has received numerous awards, including an honorary doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music in May 2001 and the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize in 2005 . In 2006 he received the Echo Klassik for the second time . In 2006 he won the Grammy in the “Best Classical Solo Album” category for his recording of the piano works by Russian composers Scriabin , Medtner and Stravinsky .
