from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Markowitsch Melnikow , also Melnikov ( Russian Александр Маркович Мельников ; born February 1, 1973 in Moscow , Soviet Union ), is a Russian pianist.

life and work

Alexander Melnikow is the grandson of the Russian-Soviet composer and pianist Sara Levina . At first Melnikow was interested in the brass instrument horn , until his older sister inspired him to play the piano. Melnikov went to the Moscow Central Music School at the age of six . He then studied at the Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Lev Naumow , which he graduated in 1997, and then in Munich with Elisso Wirsaladse and with Andreas Staier and Karl Ulrich Schnabel at the Fondazione per il Pianoforte in Lago di Como . Even as a schoolboy he received prizes in international competitions (see awards).

He began an international career at the age of 15. He kicked u. a. at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. He has played with almost all the well-known symphony orchestras in the world, for example with the Russian National Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and many others.

In addition to solo and orchestral appearances, chamber music also makes up an important part of his artistic activity. He played together with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under Teodor Currentzis , the violinists Vadim Repin and Isabelle Faust , with whom he has been certified as having a fruitful collaboration, and the cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras . He often plays four hands with Andreas Staier , Boris Wadimowitsch Beresowski and Alexei Lubimow.

As an artist with Harmonia Mundi , he recorded many CDs as a soloist and chamber musician. Melnikow plays regularly on BBC 3 in solo programs, chamber orchestras and with the BBC Orchestras, with whom he has already made several recordings.

Since 2002 Alexander Melnikow has been teaching at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester , England.

A second great passion is flying: Melnikow is a hobby pilot.

reception

Melnikow is described as a thoughtful artist and “one of the most exciting pianists of his generation”. He is considered a virtuoso Shostakovich interpreter. "The most subtle art of touch, absolute technical mastery, but above all ... a complete intellectual penetration" is Melnikow's criticism. He writes informative texts for his CDs himself.

"It must be? Have Dmitri Shostakovich's two piano concertos, the virtuoso, sparkling, carefree cheeky one from 1933 with the duet trumpet and the solemn, serious one from 1955, not been recorded often enough? Maybe. But when Alexander Melnikov plays the first notes, you listen up again. How much pleasure, enthusiasm, rhythmic fun is communicated there! "
