history

The orchestra was founded in 1997 when some musicians of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra reached the age limit of this orchestra. Since they wanted to keep playing music together, they decided to found a new chamber orchestra. They were helped by Claudio Abbado, the music director of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, who had already supported the establishment of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in 1981 in a similar situation . At the International d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence Festival in 1998, the newly formed orchestra had its first major success when it performed Mozart's opera Don Giovanni . On the occasion of a performance of Fidelio in Madrid in 2008 under the direction of Abbado - according to Welt a “great moment” - the Mahler Chamber Orchestra was praised in the French newspaper Le Monde as “the best orchestra in the world”.

Daniel Harding has played a central role since 1998. Already at the age of 22 he was Principal Guest Conductor, was elected Music Director in 2003, Principal Conductor in 2008 and finally appointed Conductor Laureate in 2011. Musically, he has worked with the MCO on key works of the classical period (including the great Mozart operas and a Beethoven cycle), the romantic and the modern. For some time now, the common musical focus has been on the romantic repertoire.

The MCO is not only international in its composition, but also in its orientation. The main focus within its radius of action lies in Europe, in addition, worldwide guest performances take the orchestra to Asia and South America at regular intervals . In 2007 the MCO made its debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. In Europe, the orchestra is a guest at the most renowned organizers and festivals between southern Italy and northern Norway. There are close connections to the Turin concert organizer Lingotto Musica , the Teatro Regio in Parma , the Alte Oper Frankfurt , the Bremen Music Festival , the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Mozart Week in Salzburg and the Grafenegg Music Festival and the Harstad Festival in Northern Norway, to the Aldeburgh Festival in Snape as well as to the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden , the Prague Spring and Radialsystem V in Berlin.

The residences of the orchestra, where the MCO regularly spends longer rehearsals and concerts, form the centers of the extensive touring activity. The MCO orchestra has been in residence at Ferrara Musica since 1998 . Around 100 concert programs and operas have been performed during the last fifteen years as part of the residency. Part of the concerts were conducted by Claudio Abbado and Daniel Harding, with whom the MCO is opening up new fields of repertoire. There are also exciting first encounters with young conductors and soloists. The MCO is also active in Ferrara outside the Teatro Comunale Ferrara , has its own chamber music concert series at the Ferrara Jazz Club and works closely with the Conservatorio of Ferrara.

The MCO Residence Orchestra has been in North Rhine-Westphalia since May 2009 . The venues are the concert halls in Dortmund , Essen and Cologne . The Kunststiftung NRW and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia support the ensemble as partners and sponsors. Together with the concert halls and the Orchesterzentrum | NRW in Dortmund, top-class artistic opera and concert performances take place. An important part of the residency is the MCO Academy for the education and training of young orchestras.

Daniele Gatti has been the orchestra's Artistic Advisor since May 27, 2016 .
