Radialsystem (cultural center)
The Radialsystem (originally Radialsystem V ) is a culture and event center in Holzmarktstrasse in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain near the Ostbahnhof and the Spree . It consists of the listed machine hall of the former sewage pumping station V as well as a new part of the building that was added in 2006 and that surrounds and bridges the old building. The sewage pumping station was in operation until 1999. Today, artistic programs are produced and performed in the premises, as well as events from the fields of politics , business, science and the media .
history
The sewage pumping station V in Holzmarktstrasse was built between 1879 and 1880 after the completion of the sewer system in the Stralau district and was built according to plans by the architect Richard Tettenborn . In 1869 James Hobrecht , the main author of the development plan for the surroundings of Berlin, which came into force in 1862, was commissioned to design a sewage disposal system for Berlin. The building officer and engineer divided the city into twelve areas - twelve radial systems - from which the sewage was directed to the Berlin sewage fields . The pumping station of Radialsystem III on Halleschen Ufer later housed a lapidarium . The sewage pumping station V was rebuilt and expanded in 1905 and from 1906 disposed of the sewage of the densely built-up urban area between the Spree, Alexanderplatz , Schönhauser Allee , Ringbahn , Thaerstraße and Warschauer Straße with around 400,000 inhabitants. The sewage was pumped via the radial system to the Rieselfeld in Falkenberg north of the city. In the event of an overload, they could be directed into the Spree via emergency outlets. In World War II, one-third of the plant was destroyed. The remaining machine hall was equipped with electric pumps and was used until 1999.
Current situation
In 2004 the architect Gerhard Spangenberg presented a draft for the renovation of the listed building and won Radialsystem V GmbH as operator for the project. The visible sides of the building should remain visible. The demolition side had to be redesigned to gain additional space. A new two-storey building element was built above the former boiler house on its own supporting structure, separated from the old building by an open air storey. The side destroyed in the Second World War was given a three-storey porch. The former official residence next to Radialsystem V has been converted into a guest house.
Radialsystem V GmbH was founded in 2005 by the cultural entrepreneur Jochen Sandig and the music manager Folkert Uhde in Berlin and is the tenant and operator of the house. The house has various rooms and areas on a total of six floors that are used for conferences, gala events, receptions, parties and television productions.
The Compagnie Sasha Waltz & Guests, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin , the Vocalconsort Berlin and the soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop are closely connected to the development of the house as house ensembles through rehearsal and production processes as well as events. With the soprano Annette Dasch , Radialsystem V regularly produces the television format Annettes DaschSalon , which is broadcast on 3sat and on ZDFkultur (formerly: ZDFtheaterkanal ). In addition, artists, ensembles and institutions from various areas are regularly invited to the Radialsystem or integrated into their own formats. The national and international networking of the house is also evident in its involvement in various renowned festivals. In 2007 the jazz album Live in Berlin - Black Saint Quartet by David Murray was recorded there.
The Radial Foundation was founded in 2006 as a foundation under civil law and supports exemplary cross-genre artistic productions from and between the art genres of dance, music and visual arts.
In 2018 the suffix “V” was dropped.
Cinematic review
Filmmaker Ingo J. Biermann shot a semi-documentary experimental film about the radial system for the architecture exhibition Kultur: Stadt , which took place from March to June 2013 in the Berlin Academy of the Arts and from July to October 2013 in the Kunsthaus Graz . The film combines scenes of a little girl who paints several of Gerhard Spangenberg's architectural plans for the building, with abstract photographs by the artist Fiene Scharp , which relate the old and new parts of the radial system and increasingly lead them to absurdity in an anarchic way .
According to the director's statements, “the claim to ignore, cross, redefine boundaries”, which he sees in the radial system, has led to the unusual shape of his film. This could “only be radical and ignore limits” if he wanted to live up to the spirit and demands of the house.
