The Kunsthaus Graz was built as part of the 2003 Capital of Culture year and has been a new architectural landmark of the city of Graz ever since . The building, whose exhibition program includes contemporary art from the last five decades, is part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum .

architecture

In its unusual shape it differs significantly from other exhibition buildings of contemporary art, which are often determined by the idea of the " white cube ". The building - called “Friendly Alien” by its creators Peter Cook and Colin Fournier - stands out in form and material through its biomorphic, round forms from the baroque roof landscape with its red tile roofs, but it is close to the facade of the iron, built in 1847 House . Stylistically, the Kunsthaus Graz can be assigned to the blob architecture .

About 15 light inlet probes - nozzles - are oriented about 45 ° diagonally upwards and north, only a single, lower set is flatter and precisely aligned with the clock tower on the Schlossberg.

concept

The Kunsthaus Graz was developed as an institution for the organization of international exhibitions of multidisciplinary, modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. It does not collect, does not set up permanent exhibitions, has no permanent depots and no research facilities. It serves exclusively for the presentation and communication of contemporary artistic production.

As founding director, Peter Pakesch was responsible for the direction and program of the Kunsthaus between the opening in 2003 and the end of his directorship at the Universalmuseum Joanneum.

"BIX" media facade

In one area of the vaulted facade of the Kunsthaus, light elements are integrated that make the outer skin of the building usable as a screen. The planning and implementation took place in cooperation with the artists / architects of the realities: united group . "BIX" - the name of the facade is made up of the words "Big" and "Pixel" - conceals the acrylic glass skin on the east side of the building towards the Mur and the city center. This oversized screen serves, partly accompanying the exhibition, as an additional medium for art projects, in particular for dealing with public space. Technically, the BIX media façade consists of 930 commercially available ring-shaped 40 watt fluorescent tubes spread over an area of 900 m². The light bodies can be individually electronically controlled and as a whole they form a large screen for moving images. The coarse resolution and the limited visibility of the edge zones of the surface curved concavely at the edges limit the usability. From the Schlossberg plateau 750 m away (from a 45 ° horizontal angle), presentations with moving or changing image content, e.g. B. a ticker on the approximately 60 m wide and 15 m high screen is conspicuous and clearly visible from dusk.

Others

On May 1, 2011, Österreichische Post AG issued a postage stamp on the property as part of the definitive series of art houses .

For the tenth anniversary of the Kunsthaus, Ingo J. Biermann , Fiene Scharp and Kai Miedendorp shot a semi-documentary short film in and about the building. The film Astronaut's Ark was conceived for the exhibition Kultur: Stadt , which took place from March to June 2013 at the Akademie der Künste (Berlin) and from July to October 2013 at the Kunsthaus Graz. In October 2013 the film, of which there is a five-minute exhibition version and a ten-minute theatrical version, was shown at the Architecture Film Festival in Rotterdam.
