The ZDFtheaterkanal was a television broadcaster and part of the ZDF's digital programming . He broadcast daily from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. the following day. Broadcasting started on December 9, 1999. Broadcasting was discontinued on May 7, 2011 in favor of ZDFkultur .

The program was nationwide via the cable TV network ( DVB-C ) and the satellite Astra ( DVB-S to see). In addition, the channel could be received as IPTV via the Internet via the Telekom Entertain platform from T-Home and via Alice as well as with the free Zattoo program .

In summer 2008 plans were presented to convert the theater channel into a culture channel. On May 7, 2011, at 6:30 am, the new channel ZDFkultur started and replaced the ZDFtheaterkanal to cover the topics of music , performing arts , film culture , network culture and gaming . In the transition period between the end of broadcasting and the start of broadcasting, ZDFkultur had sent a test image on the frequencies of the theater channel. The frequencies were taken over on May 7, 2011 at 1:20 a.m.

The theater channel and the subsequent channel ZDFkultur were managed from 2001 by Wolfgang Bergmann , previously by Walter Konrad .

The broadcaster showed a program that covered all areas of the performing arts . This included the broadcasts of productions, documentaries, portraits and talk shows. Since the mid-2000s, other art forms have been added to the program. Music formats such as Later with Jools Holland or concert recordings were broadcast.

ARTE and 3sat programs produced by ZDF were also repeated, including Kulturzeit , Tracks , Durch die Nacht mit ... , Bauerfeind and FOYER.

Furthermore, older shows such as the ZDF hit parade and disco as well as, now and then, older TV series were also shown on the theater channel.
