WDR television is the regional television program of West German Broadcasting for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The program began broadcasting on December 17, 1965 under the name Westdeutsches Fernsehen (WDF) . In 1988 the program was renamed West 3 and has been broadcasting under the current name since 1994.

Since 1991 a distinction has been made between full programs and specialty programs in the State Broadcasting Agreement and WDR television has been assigned to full programs.

On April 30, 2012, an HD simulcast in the high-resolution 720p format started . However, only WDR Cologne is broadcast consistently in HD. All other HD channels use a DVB feature that allows the same video signal to be used by several channels of a transponder: at local time they use the SD signal of the local programs, the rest of the time a generic HD signal.

Since August 2015 the WDR has been broadcasting in HD via DVB-T2 as a test in Cologne and Bonn .

Since October 25, 2016 WDR Köln HD has been fed into the entire cable network of Unitymedia . Thus, in addition to North Rhine-Westphalia, you can now also see WDR in HD in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse .

Well-known programs

From 1966 on, the art historian Wibke von Bonin built up the visual arts department , which she headed until 1996. Regionalization
