Standard Definition Television
Standard definition television [ ˌstændəd ˌdɛfɪˈnɪʃən ˈtɛlɪvɪʒən ] ( SDTV ) is a collective term for video resolutions that were already common for analog television reception.
In the course of the switch from analog to digital television reception, the video resolution of mostly 720 × 576 ( PAL ) or 720 × 480 pixels ( NTSC ), which was common at the time, was initially retained. In addition, higher resolutions of 1280 × 720 or even 1920 × 1080 pixels - high definition television (HDTV) - are now being broadcast. Since both resolutions are currently mostly broadcast in parallel, SDTV is used as an explicit name for the well-known resolutions, also known as digital standard resolution .
In some cases, the abbreviations introduced with HDTV are also used, for example 576i or 480p. These terms refer solely to the vertical resolution, as the horizontal resolution is not fixed due to the possibilities of 4: 3 and 16: 9 format. The appended letter designates almost always used in television interlaced ( " i nterlaced scanning") or p rogressive image transmission .
