Jürgen Domian
Jürgen Domian (born December 21, 1957 in Gummersbach ) is a German television and former radio presenter as well as author and journalist . He achieved great fame through the longstanding moderation of the telephone talk show Domian .
Life
Career
Domian obtained his secondary school leaving certificate at the commercial school and then switched to the grammar school, where he was promoted by the director Horst Kienbaum and passed his Abitur there . While studying German , philosophy and political science at the University of Cologne , Jürgen Domian worked as a cable operator for television. He later took over as the successor to Chris Howland, the moderation of the program Blue Monday .
From 1993 Domian presented the radio show Die Heßenummer , which was broadcast every Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. as part of the youth program Riff - the breakwater from the former broadcaster WDR 1 . It was a telephone talk program that differed from the later program Domian in only two respects : After each caller there was a music track, and because of the time, only topics suitable for children could be dealt with. Since the show enjoyed increasing popularity, it should be integrated into the program of the WDR-1 successor station Eins Live . The plan to "postpone" the hot number into the night initially met with protests among WDR-1 listeners. On April 1, 1995 Eins Live started, on April 3, 1995 the first edition of Domian was broadcast. The last broadcast was on December 17, 2016.
At the end of August 2019, the WDR announced that presenter Jürgen Domian would return to television in November 2019. The program is entitled Domian live , "in which he will open up to new stories - 'live and without taboos'". The first of four planned programs was broadcast on November 8, 2019 on WDR television . On November 29th, the last broadcast was shown. The WDR was satisfied with the ratings, especially among the younger viewers. The first broadcast saw almost 600,000 viewers. On average, the four talk shows watched 300,000 people. In the last broadcast, Domian announced the continuation of the format in 2020. The talk show retains its slot, but is no longer broadcast weekly, but on the last Friday of the month. The first edition ran on January 31, 2020.
Social and political engagement
In January 2003 Domian was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his social commitment .
Domian is a member of the SPD , before that he was involved with the Greens for years and before that with the FDP . According to his own statements, he has been campaigning for AIDS relief for several years .
Domian has been supporting the Center for Palliative Medicine at Cologne University Hospital on a voluntary basis for years . According to his own statements, he has been an advocate and promoter of palliative medical care since his father, suffering from cancer, “fell asleep peacefully” in the Cologne facility.
In 2015 he received the special prize of the Robert Geisendörfer Prize 2015 for his long-time moderation of the live talk Domian in 1LIVE and WDR television .
In 2016 he was awarded the special prize of the 1 Live Krone .
In 2018, in a column entitled No longer my country, my homeland , he criticized increasing anti-Semitism and homophobia among Muslim migrants and the behavior of the elites in Germany: “An ignorance that has been rampant in left-wing liberal and intellectual circles for decades. I know what I'm talking about. I have been a member of the SPD for more than 30 years, and I know the knee-jerk defense against criticizing the culture and tradition of our Muslim friends. You were quickly pushed into the right corner. The AfD made this behavior possible in the first place. "
In 2020 he criticized the Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg in the guest article "Dear Greta, let the people have the SUVs" in the Cologne city of Anzeiger . He writes “Now I am sitting here and I cannot help it. I have to tell you that you are getting on my nerves quite a bit now. ”He accuses her of“ making a lot of money ”. He demands “Please dispose of your halo! Naturally environmentally friendly. "
Personal
Domian's parents come from West Prussia and have Huguenot ancestors. Since his high school days, Domian has been friends with Hella von Sinnen , who like him comes from Gummersbach . Moreover counted Dirk Bach (1961-2012) to his friends. At the time when Hella von Sinnen lived in a shared apartment with Dirk Bach , Jürgen Domian visited regularly, as often as his time as a community service provider in Gummersbach allowed. Together with von Sinnen he also published books. In a Stern article on the subject of “sexual cross-border commuters” it is said that Domian “publicly acknowledges his bisexual inclinations. 'Everything is allowed as long as it is good for you and does not harm anyone.' With Domian, bisexuality no longer appears threatening, but normal, is no longer an abyss, but a variety. ”In an interview with him and Hella von Sinnen by the Taz on July 4, 2013, however, he explained that, due to hostility from the gay scene, he usually called himself“ gay ". "I'm still bisexual today, but I'm fed up with this discussion. In the meantime, I usually say: I'm gay. Then it's quiet. I have so often experienced being attacked by gays because I supposedly don't stand by my sexuality when I call myself bi. So in God's name, then I'll be - gay. "
