COSMO (until December 31, 2016: Funkhaus Europa ) is the international and intercultural radio program of Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR) and Radio Bremen , which is produced in collaboration with Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB).

history

The forerunners of COSMO were Funkhaus Europa and the so-called " guest worker programs " with which the WDR and other broadcasters of the ARD wanted to do justice to the growing number of foreign workers in Germany since 1961. After these programs in various native languages had been linked to changing German-language radio waves for decades, the relevant broadcasters decided in the 1990s to bundle them in their own program and to supplement them with a German-language offering. The main reason for this was the assessment that the idea of the “guest” worker had long since become obsolete and, instead, the support and promotion of cultural diversity (“diversity”) would become a core task of public broadcasting programs in an immigration society.

After several months of preparation, Funkhaus Europa was launched on August 30, 1998 as a new radio wave from WDR and Radio Bremen in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bremen. Since January 1, 2009, Funkhaus Europa can also be heard in Berlin and parts of Brandenburg on the frequencies of Radio Multikulti (rbb), which was discontinued at the end of 2008 and with which Funkhaus Europa had previously worked together.

COSMO has editorial offices in Cologne, Bremen and Berlin.

At the beginning of 2016, plans by WDR radio director Valerie Weber to cut the niche programs Funkhaus Europa in favor of mainstream and rotation led to public protests. A petition to those responsible, started on the Change.org platform in mid-February 2016 , had 6000 signatories after just three days and was publicly supported by prominent Cologne musicians such as Gentleman and Patrice . In March 2016, the WDR Broadcasting Council decided on a program reform for July 1, 2016, which primarily provides for the introduction of regular broadcasts in Arabic. At the same time, savings were implemented by reducing the extensive Turkish program Cologne Radyosu to the same extent that also applies to the other languages on Funkhaus Europa. Furthermore, savings should be made on the music broadcasts. On January 1, 2017, the station was renamed COSMO .

reception

The alignment of the format with the German radio mainstream was critically appreciated by various media. After the program realignment in 2016, Der Spiegel wrote : “The heart of the program is rather an austerity program that - once again - degrades a public broadcaster to a musical sprinkling station, thus robbing it of a large part of its independence and specialty. ... Instead of sending the listeners on a voyage of discovery to global music with competent author-moderators, to new sounds from Buenos Aires , São Paulo , Luanda , Lisbon, Bamako or South Africa, one now wants them more with the "color of world music" soaping, the unsuspecting and disinterested wording of station manager Valerie Weber, a designated Dudelfunk -Radiofrau. "Continue writes Christoph Twickel, with the" "" could be "this public music policy of extermination hardly explain general rigor. "For the money that the nightly“ Funkhaus-Europa ”DJs received for two hours of music selection and moderation, you can't even buy a three-minute contribution in the daily program."

program

An important characteristic of COSMO is the international team with employees from over 20 nations. Under the guiding principle “Global Sounds Radio”, the wave addresses a cosmopolitan, urban audience between the ages of around 30 and 50 who are interested in internationality, diversity and a special color of music (“Global Pop”) that differentiates them from “World music” or “ethno music” does not want to represent a genre of its own, but lives from a modern, rhythm-oriented mix of pop music styles and crossover experiments. With this, COSMO tries to depict a growing musical world that goes far beyond the mostly Anglo-American dominated charts.

During the day, COSMO broadcasts in German. In the evenings, TV shows are offered in the mother tongues of the nine largest groups of immigrants in Germany.

Current program

The Cologne editorial office of the WDR is currently designing the program from Monday to Friday, and broadcasts from the Funkhaus and the editorial team of Radio Bremen on weekends and on public holidays.

COSMO sends messages every full hour and Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. also every half hour. The “Daily Good News”, which is usually broadcast at 7:20 am, is also part of the morning broadcast. According to its own statement, the broadcaster wants to use it to bring up the things that rarely find their way into the classic news.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., COSMO broadcasts a magazine-style program. The hour between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. is a focus hour on culture, travel, fashion or literature. These night programs were replaced by an automated music rotation under the title "Black to Blue". On Saturdays between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m., COSMO music director Francis Gay presents electronic rhythms and interviews with artists, especially from the African and Latin American cultural area, in the selector .
