history

It started broadcasting on September 18, 1994, at that time under the name SFB 4 Multi Kulti . The wave boss was Friedrich Voss , on whose persistent and successful preparatory work the establishment of this wave went back against all opposition. The moderator's language was German from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and broadcasting in different languages from 5:00 p.m. World music radio shows from various radio stations ( BBC , WDR etc.) were broadcast from 10:05 pm to 6:00 am . The program concept was unique in the German-speaking area, only Funkhaus Europa from WDR and Radio Bremen followed a similar concept from 1998; both stations sometimes also broadcast a joint program. On December 31, 2008 at 10:00 p.m. Multikulti was discontinued at RBB due to a lack of funds.

Instead, since January 1, 2009, the program of Funkhaus Europa has been broadcast on the former frequencies of Radio Multikulti. Some former employees and friends have been running selected programs from Radio Multikulti since December 31, 2008 at 10:05 p.m. as private internet radio under the name radio multicult2.0 . The success of this project has given the volunteers since May 2010 the opportunity to broadcast six hours a day of their twenty-four hour program on the non-commercial frequency 88.4 MHz. Since then, the station has been called multicult.fm.Furthermore, there has been a glass broadcasting studio in the Marheinekehalle in Kreuzberg since March 2011 .

Protests against the planned closure of the station

The Friends of Radio Multikulti was founded in June 2008. This is a listeners' initiative of around 100 members who had set themselves the goal of preventing the radio station from being shut down. The friendship was actively supported mainly by the Werkstatt der Kulturen , for example, put a space for the weekly meetings are available, as well as Verdi .

The Friends of Radio Multikulti collected over 30,000 signatures from May 2008, but also tried to win over celebrities as public advocates. The WOMEX President Christoph Borkowsky Akbar , who received the honorary RUTH at the TFF Rudolstadt 2008, dedicated this award to Radio Multikulti and wore a T-shirt with the words “Create two, three, many radiomultikulti ” at the award ceremony . Even Stephen Marley , son of Bob Marley , drew the Friends of position for obtaining the transmitter talking to members. Chambao , the Spanish flamenco chill band, showed their solidarity during a concert in the Arena Treptow by holding up a Spanish-language poster of the initiative. Berlin artists and bands such as PR Kantate and Nosliw recorded a solidarity CD with the title “must stay!”, The proceeds of which were to benefit the Friends of Radio Multikulti.

In addition, the initiative brought a moratorium demand into the public debate. Accordingly, the closure of the wave should initially be postponed to the end of 2009 and a sustainable financing concept should be developed by the RBB by then. The demand met with a great response in the Berlin press and politics. In the progress report of the National Integration Plan (October 2008), the Media AG clearly criticized the station's closure.

Stipe Erceg , Dieter Hildebrandt , Gitte , Elmar Altvater , Jutta Limbach , Rita Süssmuth , Sarah Wiener , Julia Franck , Dunja Hayali , Wladimir Kaminer and many others had sent an open letter to the RBB on October 30, 2008 as a "Prominentenappell", radio Maintaining and developing multiculturalism.

Radio multicult2.0 / multicult.fm

As a reaction to the closure of the radio station Radio Multikulti, Radio multicult2.0 was initially created as an internet radio, which was produced for some time on a houseboat, the "MS Heiterkeit". Since the station can be received hourly on a frequency of 88.4 MHz (sometimes 90.7 MHz), it has been called Multicult.fm .
